Karatina Washing Station is located on the red volcanic soils of the southern slopes of Mt Kenya, in one of the country's most renowned coffee growing regions. The distinct weather patterns in the area create two wet seasons, resulting in two coffee harvests per year.
Karatina is the Kikuyu name for a wild tree that produces fruit used to make the famous Muratina beer. It's used to this day to celebrate ceremonies and rituals.
